A1 · Section 15

The Verb: The Past

The past places an event before now, and covers what English splits into a simple past and a perfect. Its marker is -ఏ- (or -ఇన్- before -ది), with a small class of verbs that take -నా- instead — and the personal endings of ¶74 close the form as they do in every other tense.

How Telugu Divides Time

96.Telugu finite verbs mark three tense-modes a learner meets first: the progressive in -తు- + ఉండు (tu- + uṇḍu) (¶76), the habitual/future in -తా (tā)- (¶78), and the past treated in this section. English’s continuous, simple, and perfect are not a matching three-way split in Telugu.

నేను చదువుతున్నాను.
nēnu caduvutunnānu.
I am reading. (progressive — action going on now)
నేను చదువుతాను.
nēnu caduvutānu.
I read (habitually); or, I will read.
నేను చదివాను.
nēnu cadivānu.
I read; I have read. (past)
  • [1] A continuous or perfect sense built with an auxiliary (past participle + ఉండు (uṇḍu), and the rest of the compound system) belongs with the compound verb, not with a fourth synthetic tense.

The Past — ఏ / ఇన్

97.The past is formed by adding the tense suffix -ఏ (ē)- to the past stem, then a personal ending of ¶74. Before the non-masculine singular -ది (di), -ఏ- is replaced by -ఇన్ (in)-: వెళ్ళింది (veḷḷindi), not వెళ్ళాది (veḷḷādi).

నిన్న అతను ఊరికి వెళ్ళాడు.
ninna atanu ūriki veḷḷāḍu.
Yesterday he went to the village.
ఆమె పుస్తకం చదివింది.
āme pustakaṁ cadivindi.
She read / has read the book.

నేను (nēnu)వెళ్ళాను (veḷḷānu)I went
నువ్వు (nuvvu)వెళ్ళావు (veḷḷāvu)you went
అతను (atanu)వెళ్ళాడు (veḷḷāḍu)he went
ఆమె, అది (āme, adi)వెళ్ళింది (veḷḷindi)she / it went
మేము (mēmu)వెళ్ళాము (veḷḷāmu)we went
మీరు, వారు (mīru, vāru)వెళ్ళారు (veḷḷāru)you / they went
అవి (avi)వెళ్ళాయి (veḷḷāyi)they (n.) went
The past of Telugu answers both English went and have gone (K&G §15.2).

The Past Stem

98.A stem-final -ు (u) is dropped before the past suffix. A non-initial medial -ు- of the root becomes -ి (i)-: చదువు (caduvu) → చదివాను (cadivānu), అడుగు (aḍugu) → అడిగాను (aḍigānu).

అమ్ము → అమ్మాను
ammu → ammānu
to sell → I sold — final -ు dropped
చదువు → చదివాను
caduvu → cadivānu
to read → I read — medial -ు- → -ి-
అడుగు → అడిగాను
aḍugu → aḍigānu
to ask → I asked

The -నా- Class

99.After a stem ending in a short vowel + -న్ (n), the past suffix is -నా (nā)- (and -న (na)- before -ది) (di), with the final consonant doubled: తిను (tinu) → తిన్నాను (tinnānu), తిన్నది (tinnadi). The class is small — అను, తిను, విను, కొను, కను, ఉండు, కూర్చొను, నిల్చును (anu, tinu, vinu, konu, kanu, uṇḍu, kūrconu, nilcunu), and a few others.

నిన్న నేను అన్నం తిన్నాను.
ninna nēnu annaṁ tinnānu.
Yesterday I ate rice.
ఆమె మాట విన్నది.
āme māṭa vinnadi.
She heard the word.

నువ్వు (nuvvu)తిన్నావు (tinnāvu)

ఆమె, అది (āme, adi)తిన్నది (tinnadi)
మేము (mēmu)తిన్నాము (tinnāmu)
మీరు (mīru)తిన్నారు (tinnāru)
అవి (avi)తిన్నాయి (tinnāyi)

పడు — -డా-

100.After the stem పడ్ (paḍ), the past suffix is -డా (ḍā)- (and -డ (ḍa)- before -ది) (di): పడ్డాను (paḍḍānu), పడ్డది (paḍḍadi) / పడింది (paḍindi).

పిల్లవాడు కింద పడ్డాడు.
pillavāḍu kinda paḍḍāḍu.
The boy fell down.
పుస్తకం కింద పడ్డది.
pustakaṁ kinda paḍḍadi.
The book fell down.

Denying the Past — again

101.The past is denied by the infinitive stem + లేదు (lēdu), one form for every person (¶81): వెళ్ళలేదు (veḷḷalēdu), తినలేదు (tinalēdu), చేయలేదు (cēyalēdu). The affirmative’s person ending disappears; the negative tense of ¶82 is not used here.

నిన్న నేను వెళ్ళాను. → నిన్న నేను వెళ్ళలేదు.
ninna nēnu veḷḷānu. → ninna nēnu veḷḷalēdu.
Yesterday I went. → Yesterday I did not go.
ఆమె తిన్నది. → ఆమె తినలేదు.
āme tinnadi. → āme tinalēdu.
She ate. → She did not eat.

చేయు and Noun + చేయు

102.చేయు (cēyu) to do takes a past stem చేస్- / చేశ్ (cēs- / cēś)-: చేశాను (cēśānu), చేశాడు (cēśāḍu), చేసింది (cēsindi). After a noun it is a verbaliser — పని చేయు (pani cēyu) to work, వంట చేయు (vaṇṭa cēyu) to cook — and only చేయు conjugates; the noun is unchanged.

నిన్న నేను పని చేశాను.
ninna nēnu pani cēśānu.
Yesterday I worked. — also written పనిచేశాను
అమ్మ వంట చేసింది.
amma vaṇṭa cēsindi.
Mother cooked.
అతను ఈ పని చేయలేదు.
atanu ī pani cēyalēdu.
He did not do this work.
  • [1] పనిచేయు (panicēyu) as one orthographic word and పని చేయు (pani cēyu) as two are the same construction: the tense and person endings attach to చేయు (cēyu) alone, never to పని (pani).
