The Verb: The Future-Habitual

The -తా- form of ¶78 is taken up again for its stem changes: geminates simplify, -ప్పు and -ట్టు voice, -న్ turns -త్- retroflex, and -చ్చు becomes -స్- — the same personal endings closing each form, and the negative tense denying them.

The Habitual and the Future — one form

103.-తా (tā)- (and -తున్ (tun)- before -ది (di), ¶79) marks a habitual action or a future one. Context — an adverb such as రోజూ (rōjū) or రేపు (rēpu), or the situation — decides which English tense to use; Telugu does not split the two.

నేను రోజూ తెలుగు చదువుతాను.
nēnu rōjū telugu caduvutānu.
I study Telugu every day. (habitual)
రేపు నేను ఊరికి వెళ్తాను.
rēpu nēnu ūriki veḷtānu.
Tomorrow I will go to the village. (future)
ఆమె రేపు వస్తుంది.
āme rēpu vastundi.
She will come tomorrow.

Geminates Simplify

104.Before -తా (tā)-, a stem-final geminate is simplified to a single consonant: వెళ్ళు (veḷḷu) → వెళ్తాను (veḷtānu), not వెళ్ళుతాను (veḷḷutānu).

వెళ్ళు (veḷḷu) — future-habitual
subjectformgloss
నేను (nēnu)వెళ్తాను (veḷtānu)I go / will go
నువ్వు (nuvvu)వెళ్తావు (veḷtāvu)you go / will go
అతను (atanu)వెళ్తాడు (veḷtāḍu)he goes / will go
ఆమె, అది (āme, adi)వెళ్తుంది (veḷtundi)she / it goes / will go
మేము (mēmu)వెళ్తాము (veḷtāmu)we go / will go
మీరు, వారు (mīru, vāru)వెళ్తారు (veḷtāru)you / they go / will go
అవి (avi)వెళ్తాయి (veḷtāyi)they (n.) go / will go

-ప్పు and -ట్టు Voice

105.Stems in -ప్పు (ppu) and -ట్టు (ṭṭu) replace the geminate by a voiced single consonant before -తా (tā)-: చెప్పు (ceppu) → చెబతాను (cebatānu); కొట్టు (koṭṭu) → కొడతాను (koḍatānu). Before -తున్ (tun)- the vowel is -ు (u)-: చెబుతుంది (cebutundi), కొడుతుంది (koḍutundi).

నేను నీకు చెబతాను.
nēnu nīku cebatānu.
I will tell you.
ఆమె నిజం చెబుతుంది.
āme nijaṁ cebutundi.
She tells / will tell the truth.
అతను తలుపు కొడతాడు.
atanu talupu koḍatāḍu.
He will knock on the door.

-న్ makes -త్- Retroflex

106.After a stem ending in a short vowel + -న్ (n), the -త్ (t)- of the future-habitual becomes -ట్ (ṭ)-, and the -న్ is written as the anusvāra before it: విను (vinu) → వింటాను (viṇṭānu); తిను (tinu) → తింటాను (tiṇṭānu).

రేపు నేను కథ వింటాను.
rēpu nēnu katha viṇṭānu.
Tomorrow I will hear the story.
మాధవ్ ఈ రోజు అన్నం తింటాడు.
mādhav ī rōju annaṁ tiṇṭāḍu.
Madhav eats / will eat rice today.

-చ్చు becomes -స్-

107.Stems in -చ్చు (ccu) (and several related class-VI verbs) take -స్ (s)- before -తా (tā)-: వచ్చు (vaccu) → వస్తాను (vastānu); ఇచ్చు (iccu) → ఇస్తాను (istānu). The citation imperative of వచ్చు remains the irregular రా (rā).

రేపు నేను వస్తాను.
rēpu nēnu vastānu.
Tomorrow I will come.
ఆమె నాకు పుస్తకం ఇస్తుంది.
āme nāku pustakaṁ istundi.
She will give me a book.
వచ్చు (vaccu) — future-habitual
subjectform
నేను (nēnu)వస్తాను (vastānu)
నువ్వు (nuvvu)వస్తావు (vastāvu)
అతను (atanu)వస్తాడు (vastāḍu)
ఆమె, అది (āme, adi)వస్తుంది (vastundi)
మేము (mēmu)వస్తాము (vastāmu)
మీరు (mīru)వస్తారు (vastāru)
అవి (avi)వస్తాయి (vastāyi)

చేయు in the Future-Habitual

108.చేయు (cēyu) has the future-habitual stem చేస్ (cēs)-: చేస్తాను (cēstānu), చేస్తుంది (cēstundi). In పని చేయు (pani cēyu) and వంట చేయు (vaṇṭa cēyu) the noun is still unchanged and may be written apart or solid — పని చేస్తాను (pani cēstānu) / పనిచేస్తాను (panicēstānu).

రేపు నేను పని చేస్తాను.
rēpu nēnu pani cēstānu.
Tomorrow I will work.
అమ్మ రోజూ వంట చేస్తుంది.
amma rōjū vaṇṭa cēstundi.
Mother cooks every day.

Denying the Habitual and Future — again

109.The habitual/future is denied by the negative tense of ¶82 — medial -ు (u)- to -అ (a)-, and its own endings — not by లేదు (lēdu): వెళ్ళను (veḷḷanu), తినను (tinanu), చేయను (cēyanu), రాను (rānu) (from వచ్చు) (vaccu). Past denial with లేదు and progressive denial with -టం లేదు (ṭaṁ lēdu) stay where ¶81 and ¶83 put them.

రేపు నేను వెళ్తాను. → రేపు నేను వెళ్ళను.
rēpu nēnu veḷtānu. → rēpu nēnu veḷḷanu.
Tomorrow I will go. → Tomorrow I will not go.
ఆమె వస్తుంది. → ఆమె రాదు.
āme vastundi. → āme rādu.
She will come. → She will not come. — వచ్చు uses the irregular negative stem రా-
నేను పని చేస్తాను. → నేను పని చేయను.
nēnu pani cēstānu. → nēnu pani cēyanu.
I will work. → I will not work.

Past, Progressive, and Future-Habitual Together

110.A time word picks the tense-mode: నిన్న (ninna) with the past, ఇప్పుడు (ippuḍu) with the progressive, రేపు (rēpu) or రోజూ (rōjū) with -తా (tā)-. The personal endings are the same set in all three; only the tense marker and the stem alternate.

మాధవ్ నిన్న ఆపిల్ తిన్నాడు.
mādhav ninna āpil tinnāḍu.
Madhav ate an apple yesterday.
మాధవ్ ఇప్పుడు ఆరెంజ్ తింటున్నాడు.
mādhav ippuḍu ārenj tiṇṭunnāḍu.
Madhav is eating an orange now.
మాధవ్ రేపు అన్నం తింటాడు.
mādhav rēpu annaṁ tiṇṭāḍu.
Madhav will eat rice tomorrow.
